Back in 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I figured to book accommodation upon arrival, yet when I arrived, a large conference was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of bed down in the airport – only to discover the local airport, not like the one back home, closes 24 hours. Unsure of quite what to do and growing worried, I boarded a city-bound bus and began walking near the casino, reasoning I could pass the evening in an establishment operating 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for acing the admissions interview the following day, but as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.

The world needs more people like that woman.

It seems I seemed lost since a young woman saw me wandering around downtown and wondered if I was OK. I explained my situation and without hesitation she offered I could sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – which was perfect, as that’s where my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her work shift. I was able to use the bathroom and somewhere safe and secure to sleep.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me what a big chance she undertook being a woman inviting a guy she’d just met sleep on her floor. At that time I operated under a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she did that – yet deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up attending that university, and I didn’t meet her again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of generosity. My sincere desire is that karma has returned her good deed abundantly. We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
