Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Figure, Dies at 81 Years of Age

Global audiences mourns the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and performer whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in spreading the reggae genre across the globe. He has died at the age of 81.

“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” wrote his wife Latifa on Instagram. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who shared his life’s path. To all his fans globally, please know that your support was his motivation throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hit songs such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat musical style and uplifting temperament brought him a large and longstanding following.

In addition to his musical achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film “The Harder They Come”, a performance that received critical praise and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.

He is one of just a handful of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
