They first caught the attention of Peter Wollny in 1992 when he was documenting Bach manuscripts at the Royal Library of Belgium.

The organ works - the Chaconne composition in D minor and G minor composition - were undated and unsigned. Mr Wollny spent the subsequent thirty years working to confirm the identity of the pieces.

The compositions were executed by organist from the Netherlands the renowned organist, who said he was proud to be able to play them for the initial performance in three hundred twenty years.

He said the compositions were "of a very high quality" and would be "a valuable resource for modern musicians, as they are also well-suited for more compact instruments".

Historical Significance

They are considered to have been created during Bach's formative years, when he was working as an organ teacher in the municipality of Arnstadt in central Germany.

The researcher, who is now the leader of the Bach Archive in the municipality, said they displayed several qualities unique to the composer.

"Musically, the pieces also include elements that can be found in the composer's creations from that time, but not in those of any other composer," he said.

They are considered to have been recorded in 1705 by one of Bach's pupils, Salomon GĂĽnther John.

At a presentation of the pieces, the expert said he was "99.99% sure that Bach had created the pair of works" and they have now been included into the recognized inventory of his musical output.
