Gus Atkinson increased England's injury problems upon exiting the field on the second morning in the Melbourne Test against Australia. Atkinson felt a problem in his hamstring immediately following a delivery of the fourth over on Saturday. The touring camp stated the 27-year-old felt some "soreness" and was to take time off the field for further assessment "during the day". The final Test in this Ashes battle beginning on 4 January begins at the end of the week. England have been without strike bowlers Mark Wood due to knee trouble and Jofra Archer because of a side injury during this series. Matthew Fisher was added to the party as injury reinforcement. His form was underwhelming early in the series, managing only a handful of scalps. He was omitted of the third Test, then recalled for the Boxing Day match in the playing XI. Surrey's Atkinson improved at the MCG, bagging two scalps during the host's first knock, then making 28 with the bat being one of only three English batsmen to get into double digits. After bowling one over late on the first day, he resumed the next day and removed Scott Boland taken by the wicketkeeper. Yet, towards the conclusion of that over, he sent down a variation to Travis Head and promptly felt at his leg.
