The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few changes and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
